| BECOMING FIT, TAKING THE FIRST STEP PART I
So, you have been thinking about getting some exercise. Way To Go!! Here’s what’s in store for you when you do. Regular exercise will:
1.) Increase you energy
2.) Decrease your stress level
3.) Maintain or lose weight
4.) Improve your attitude
5.) Improve your self-esteem
6.) Improve your health
7.) Strengthen your bones
Regular exercise will also reduce your risk of early death, heart disease, cancer and diabetes. These are just a few of the many benefits of being physically active. The great thing is that this list continues to grow.
Taking The First Step, Start By Doing Less!!
Many people stop exercising soon after they start because they do too much too soon. Exercising hard will exhaust you and your enthusiasm. There is a misconception that you have to sweat and feel the pain to reap the benefits of exercise. That Is Not True! Recent research and recommendations state that 30-40 minutes of light to moderate activity daily will lead to the previously mentioned benefits of physical activity. The most important thing is to get moving. All you need to do is become active more of the time.
Make It Fun!!
Find a friend and go fishing, bike riding, take the kids to the park and bring along a frisbee or a ball, or go for a nature hike in the woods. Like to dance? Join a dance club or take lessons with a spouse or friend. Was there a time when you enjoyed sports? Dust off those old shoes and get back into an old favorite like basketball, tennis, golf-with no cart! or volleyball.
Walking For Fun, Fitness and Transportation
If you are looking for a place to start, try a walking program. Walking is one of the safest, most injury-free, and least expensive forms of exercise. Take A Walk Today! Park a few blocks from work or get off the bus at an earlier stop, Park at the end of the parking lot, Walk to the corner store next time you run out of milk, Take the stairs instead of the elevator, Put dinner in the oven and go for a short walk, or walk during lunch. It will break up your day and relieve stress.
Buddy Up!
Do you have a friend or family member who would like to be more active or receive the benefits of activity? Do you have a friend who is already active? Team up and double your success. A buddy makes your exercise more fun and keeps you going. For example if your buddy is expecting you to walk in the wellness center or around the building at lunch, you will be less likely to procrastinate and not do it. Ask a friend at work, a neighbor, your spouse or kids to join you for a stroll, bike ride or a game of tennis.
